3 Days Until the 2008 Cherry Hill Youth Web Design Project

Here we are, just 3 days before the kick-off and there are some hiccups.

Each of the 10 students will have their own notebook in which to receive notes and handouts. I had some printouts already made and unfortunately, I left them in my office before I got on the plane! It makes for double work, but I have more than enough energy to atone for this.

To make this really go off without a hitch, I plan on contacting my Yahoo! Domain Service people about how to connect their websites to their new domain names.

Finally, I'm trying my best to get twice as many people to come to the Friday reception featuring the students with the websites that they created. I emailed the Mayor, the city councilman over Cherry Hill (more on this later), community leaders, Pastors, and anyone that has a vested interest in the education of children in Cherry Hill.

More later!

Update - Getting to Certain Free Websites for Decorations

2008 Cherry Hill Youth Web Design Project

I had the pleasure of talking with the principal today. I told her about the problems I had last year of getting to certain websites that have free decorations. The Baltimore City Public Schools computer system have pretty strong filters. (This is a VERY good thing!) Even if there are certain "work-arounds" to get to those sites, I'm planning on loading some of the information needed off of those sites onto my flash drive.

The big surprise that I'm planning on is to have the students have their own domain names for their websites. This should add a personal touch as well as ownership to what they're trying to accomplish. ( Instead of having foundation.webdesignforkids slash this, slash that, it will be www.JoeHenderson.com or something similar!)

Stay tuned for more updates!!

6 Days Until the Cherry Hill Youth Web Design Project kicks off!

Hello Readers!

My name is Brian and I'm a 'graduate' of Cherry Hill Arundel Elementary School #164 from 1981. Last year I came back to Arundel (26 years later) to teach 4 students how to create their own websites using only HTML coding and Notepad. (To see the websites, click on any of the links below.) The average age of these four students was 12 years!

The beautiful thing about the project last year is that these students, from Cherry Hill, accomplished something that even a lot of high school students from Poly, City, Western, Gilman, Friends, Calvert Hall, etc. do not know how to do. These students are empowered with a 21st century skill that will pay dividends throughout their lives.

Starting June 2, I'm planning on coming back to Cherry Hill a second time, with the blessings of the principal at Arundel, to teach 10 more students how to do the same thing, but this time with MORE code, which means that the student's websites will look even MORE spectacular than the ones from last year!

Media coverage of the event last year was from the Afro American, Baltimore Times, and a brief segment from Channel 2 news. I'll be doing this event again during the week of June 2-6. Hopefully, we can have the same reception on Friday June 6 like we had last year. Over 30 parents, community leaders, and adminstrators were in attendance last year.

I'm currently getting notebooks made and materials necessary to make the learning process as painless as possible in order to make this event twice as big as the event from last year! I'm also planning on keeping a blog to keep track of the event.

This years event will hopefully become the second of many, many more youth web design summits in Cherry Hill.

Sincerely,
Brian Richardson
